"The classic cuvee, which has long been selected by importer Eric Solomon, is their 2010 Domaine d’Andezon, a blend of 90% Syrah and 10% Grenache. While there are critics of Syrah grown in the southern Rhone, even the cynics agree that the old-vine Syrah from the Gard has a special character to it. This wine comes from 40+-year-old Syrah vines and 60+-year-old Grenache vines, bottled unfined and unfiltered after being aged in both tank and concrete. Dense ruby/purple, with a stunning nose of blackberry liqueur and jus de viande (beef/meat juices), its thrilling, intensely pure, full-bodied mouthfeel, good freshness, and striking floral character all combine for one of the very best bargains in dry red wine that readers are likely to find anywhere in the world. This is super and should continue to drink well for another 3-4 years."

 Created in 1965, "Les Vignerons D'Estezargues" is a Southern Rhone Cooperative located in the Gard Department, west of Villeneuve-Les-Avignon. In a region (including the whole of southern France) where every village has its cooperative, this one took a lonely path a few years ago when Estezargues chose to vinify separately and make single cuvees with the best plots of its 10 vignerons-members. In 1994 Eric Solomon visited the Vignerons d'Estezargues and met a young, passionate director/winemaker named Jean-Francois Nick. By the end of the day, he & Jean-Francois had decided on a custom bottling of old vine Syrah from one of their best parcels, Andezon. This opaque-black, blockbuster Syrah could have been Australian Shiraz. What a find! Previously sold in bulk to a very famous producer in the Rhone Valley, Eric jumped at the opportunity and over a decade later it remains one of the core items in the Eric Solomon portfolio.
