Fattoria del Cerro dominates the entire surrounding area in Montepulciano from it's vantage point of about 1,800 ft. The estate is pictured here. It is located in some of the most beautiful Tuscan countryside, abounding with olive trees, cypresses and vineyards. This is the birthplace of Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, southeast of Sienna. Of course Vino Nobile is made from Sangiovese just like Chianti. In fact Fattoria del Cerro has vineyards in Chianti Colli Senesi (so named because they are in the Sienna area of Chianti) for their Chianti wine. The Sangiovese in this area is called Prugnolo Gentile. Fattoria del Cerro is not only Montepulciano's largest private estate, it is also the one with the finest and most complete line of wines, the fruit of years of work on the part of its directors, first Guido Guardigli and now Guido Sodano, and most of all to the inspired winemaking of Lorenzo Landi, who first revealed his formidable talent with their wines. And he gets an assist from consulting enologist Riccardo Cotarella. Today's feature, the Toscana Manero is also made from these Sangiovese grapes (80%) plus Merlot (20%) which softens up this juicy blend. The local story goes that Manero was well known around town for his unrelenting practical jokes, a master teaser, who particularly enjoyed outwitting the local vintner. One day Manero decided to challenge the vintner by promising to create a wine far superior than his. Not long after, as a crowd gathered to taste, the vintner, incredulous, could not help but proclaim, "Anyone who can create a blend this fine has my deepest respects, Manero!" And so the wine Manero was born.
