Domaine St. Gayan

One of the great estates of the Southern Rhone, the owners, Jean-Pierre Meffre and his wife Martine produce wines of enormous power and concentration. The size of these vineyards totals only .75 hectare, 1/3 of which contain 100 year-old vines! Vinification follows traditional methods: 50% of the grapes are crushed, 50% fermented whole-berry; fermentation is brought to 31-32 degrees Celsius, and the wine is kept two years in tank and one year in cask before bottling.

Wine Spectator

A dark and grippy red, with lots of ganache and espresso leading the way, while mulled plum, fig paste and hoisin sauce notes fill in behind. The finish is tarry but fresh, with solid grip that's more like 2010 than 2009. Drink now through 2018.

Score: 91. —James Molesworth, October 31, 2012.

Wine Advocate

The outstanding 2009 Cotes du Rhone-Villages Rasteau is a denser, fuller, more muscular effort displaying notes of melted chocolate, scorched earth, kirsch liqueur, roasted meats and bouquet garni. This large, masculine 2009 possesses excellent balance as well as more glycerin and body than the straightforward Cotes du Rhone. Drink it over the next 5-7 years.

Score: 90. —Robert Parker, August 2012.
