Quinta da Aveleda is an example of a successful family business. The Company dates from 1947, but the owners, the Guedes family, have committed themselves to the art of vine planting and wine making for more than three centuries. The premises are located in the heart of the Vinho Verde region and are named after the estate where the vines are grown - Aveleda, Sociedade Agrícola e Comercial da Quinta da Aveleda, S.A.
Aveleda is the leading Company in the Vinho Verde industry, producing also the famous Adega Velha cognac and Charamba, a red wine from the Douro region.
One of the great ambassadors of Portuguese wine throughout the world - Casal Garcia - is made here, and the annual production of Aveleda is circa 12 million bottles, 50% of which are exported to 50 different countries.
A summing up of Aveleda's history will show how a steady development was achieved through the adequate combination of tradition, latest technology and market orientation.
1870 - Manoel Pedro Guedes becomes a producer of bottled wine, introducing innovative vineyard planting methods together with the selection of the most adequate grape varieties so as to control the quality of the wine from the first stage, year after year.
1888 - The wine from Quinta da Aveleda was awarded a medal at the Berlin Universal Exhibition.
1899 - Golden Medal at the Paris Universal Exhibition.
1929 - Another medal, at the Seville Universal Exhibition.
1947 - establishment of Sociedade Agrícola e Comercial da Quinta da Aveleda for the management of the Estate. Large increase in exports to Africa and Brazil.
- M. Eugène Helice, a French oenologist, is hired as a consultant
- The brand Casal Garcia is introduced, together with Quinta da Aveleda.
1950/1970 - large investments are made in technology and human resources, considering the spectacular sales increase, both in Portugal and abroad.
1970/1998 - an increase in domestic and international sales follows the introduction of new brands - Aveleda, Grinalda and Charamba. Aveleda stands out as one of the three largest domestic wine-making companies, and is one of the most profitable, modern and efficient businesses in this area.
