The Catena family has conducted extensive research into the soils and microclimates of Mendoza's high altitude wine country in the foothills of the Andes mountains. At different altitudes, the family’s Cabernet Sauvignon vineyards express a unique profile of aromas and flavors: the black currant and cassis fruit flavors and ripe, sweet tannins of the La Pirámide vineyard (3,100’ elevation); the spicy aromatics and pepper notes of the Domingo vineyard (3,700’ elevation); the finely grained tannins of the La Consulta vineyard (3,870’ elevation); the minerality and notes of eucalyptus of the Adrianna vineyard (5,000’). The blend of these components creates a wine of unique character that has balance, concentration and a strong varietal identity.

Wine Advocate

The 2010 Catena Cabernet Sauvignon undergoes a five-day cold maceration and is raised for 12 to 14 months in barrel: first, second and third fill. It is a blend of four vineyards and is blended with 3% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot. It has a Bordeaux-like bouquet of blackberry, bilberry, graphite and dry tobacco that is well-defined and classic in style. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins. There is a palpable sense of tension to this Cabernet, which exhibits great precision on the spicy, edgy finish. Full of personality, this comes highly recommended. Drink now-2017.

Score: 92. —Neal Martin, October 2012.

Wine Spectator

A jammy red that balances ripe plum, cassis, baking spice, mocha and medium tannins with juicy acidity. Rich, but finishes a touch on the coarse side. Drink now. 14,000 cases imported.

Score: 88. —Nathan Wesley, November 15, 2012.

Wine Enthusiast

This is a little soft and fleshy at moments, while at other times the nose is intense and sturdy. Full and tannic, this has foresty, slightly stewed berry flavors that heat up and turn chunky and toasty on the finish.

Score: 87. —Michael Schachner, December 31, 2012.
