Clos Pegase Cabernet Sauvignon Auction Lot #53 2005
Every year, the Napa Valley Vintners Association hosts Premiere Napa Valley, a barrel tasting and wine auction where participating vintners offer wines produced exclusively for this program. Only a few cases of each one-of-a-kind wine are made from a special blend, clone or vineyard designation chosen by the vintner. Each is produced just once and is available only to the highest bidder. The wine you are looking at is such a wine. We hope you enjoy this original piece of Napa Valley.
Here are the winemaker notes from Clos Pegase for this very special wine:
"One of the joys of each harvest is finding the “sweet spot” – the fraction of wine at the heart of each lot. For the 2005 vintage, we captured one such barrel from a prized parcel of Clone 6 Cabernet Sauvignon. After the free-run was drained from the tank, the wine-soaked skins were loaded into the press. The most intense and concentrated single-barrel fraction emerged from that first gentle pressing, gaining richness, density and structure from the additional maceration. This barrel is held exclusively for Premiere Napa Valley – it is a unique wine that will be found nowhere else.
Budbreak for Cabernet Sauvignon occurred in late-March of 2005, and spring rain delayed flowering until the third week of May, about two weeks later than average. The remainder of the season was idyllic: a mild summer with barely two days crossing the 100-degree mark. In accordance with the late flowering and set, harvest was two weeks later than average, with the weather holding all the way through the end of October. 2005 wines have gained a wonderful purity and elegance from the long and mild growing season.
Masses of pure Cabernet Sauvignon blackcurrant fruit coupled with toasty oak dominate the nose. Rich, concentrated and spicy, the palate of the wine is dense and juicy with great structure and a long finish. This is Napa Cabernet on a grand scale that will develop and improve in the bottle for 5 to 15 years."

Biodynamic designation is regulated by Demeter, an international certification organization. Biodynamic agriculture is based on the view of a farm as a self-contained organism. Certified organic vineyards must meet Demeter"s additional criteria for a period of one year before earning the designation "biodynamic."
Sustainably Grown
Sustainable practices incorporate organic standards and may exceed them and include ecologically and socially sound business practices such as fair pay for farm workers and energy conservation.
Screw Cap
Wines sealed with a screw cap as opposed to a cork, which experts report protects and preserves wine more effectively than does a cork, while also eliminating the possibility of cork taint.
No Sulfites
All wines naturally contain some sulfites, however wines that contain less than 10 parts per million sulfites are not required to include "Contains Sulfites" on their labels.

Wines that are still in the barrel and have yet to be bottled. Futures offer the opportunity to invest in a wine before it arrives in our store.

Like futures, pre-arrivals are wines that have not yet arrived on our shelves, however they may or may not be a new release. Pre-arrivals may already be bottled and en route to our store.

The Wine Advocate is a bimonthly wine publication featuring the consumer advice of wine critic Robert M. Parker, Jr. Initially titled The Baltimore-Washington Wine Advocate the first issue was published in 1978. Accepting no advertising, the newsletter publishes in excess of 7,500 reviews per year, utilizing Parker's rating system that employs a 50-100 point quality scale.
Wine Spectator
Wine Spectator is a lifestyle magazine that focuses on wine and wine culture. It publishes 15 issues per year with content that includes news, articles, profiles, and general entertainment pieces. Each issue also includes from 400 to more than 1,000 wine reviews, which consist of wine ratings and tasting notes.
