d'Arenberg

As well as varietal dark fruits and spice, the nose features savoury characters of cooked meats, spices and cracked black pepper. The palate is robust and concentrated with great intensity. The fruit is more expressive on the palate with a touch of raspberry, plum, blackcurrant and blueberry with underlying spice and just a hint of savoury oak. The mineral silky tannins build nicely on the palate and provide good structure and impressive length. This wine will benefit from bottle age and if cellared correctly will drink well over the next 15 years.

Wine Advocate

The 2008 Laughing Magpie Shiraz-Viognier (6%) spent 12 months in 15% new French and American oak. It is deep crimson-colored with an alluring bouquet of cedar, lilacs, Asian spices, black cherry, and blueberry. On the palate it is medium to full-bodied, concentrated, and layered with savory fruit. Nicely balanced, it will evolve for 2-3 years and drink well through 2020.

Score: 91. —Jay Miller, December 2009.

Wine Enthusiast

Starts off dark and a bit brooding, with aromas of plum, espresso and black olive, but shows hints of brighter fruit elements on the palate. Mouthfilling but dry on the finish, this is still very young; decant if serving now, or try 2013-2020.

Score: 90. —Joe Czerwinski, February 01, 2010.
