Intense garnet red in color, the powerful Marenca has a fresh nose with great complexity of aromas, layering wild berries, vanilla, chocolate, and aromatic herbs. Vigorous on the palate, the wine is rich in extracts and pleasant tannins.
Wine Spectator
The black currant, violet, black cherry and mineral aromas and flavors in this red are seductive. A rich and supple wine, though well-structured, with only hints of the tar and medicinal herb notes of many Barolos. The long aftertaste features fruit and mineral. Best from 2013 through 2032.

The Luigi Pira estate delivers a knockout Barolo (from the Marenca vineyard in Serralunga d'Alba) with impressive integrity of fruit, vibrant cherry and blackberry backed by warming aromas of chocolate and spice. The wine is velvety-rich and opulent in the mouth. Drink after 2018.

Wine Advocate
Pira's Barolo Marenca is one of the biggest, most extroverted wines being made today in Piedmont and the 2006 is no exception. It shows a touch more opulence than the Margheria in its intense, dark fruit. Readers will find incredible harmony here, and a finish that lasts forever. Iron, tar, licorice and smoke linger on the powerful finish. This is a marvelous Barolo from Pira, but patience is the key. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2026.

Sustainable practices incorporate organic standards and may exceed them and include ecologically and socially sound business practices such as fair pay for farm workers and energy conservation.
Screw Cap
Wines sealed with a screw cap as opposed to a cork, which experts report protects and preserves wine more effectively than does a cork, while also eliminating the possibility of cork taint.
No Sulfites
All wines naturally contain some sulfites, however wines that contain less than 10 parts per million sulfites are not required to include "Contains Sulfites" on their labels.

I still believe it is the simplest way to rate a wine, with its origins from grade school in the United States. A wine that I rate 90 points or more is outstanding (A), and worth buying. If I rate a wine 95 points or more (A+), it is a must buy.
