Marengo

Marengo is privileged to be among the many more famous names who own vineyards in the "Brunate" cru, an immaculately positioned parcel of land that is considered to be one of the grand crus of the Langhe. The estate makes tiny quantities of modern-style Barolo from old vines in their tiny cellar on La Morra's main street; in great years, these particularly well-balanced, ample, intense, tannic wines hint at truffles; they are perfectly rich and complete Baroli. Integrated insect and disease control is carried out. Sulphur and copper base products are mainly used. No insecticides are used. No herbicides are used. Natural cover crops are left (grass cover) between the rows of vines. The grass is mowed in the summer and left to form humus (the turf is left in place). Only the lowest doses of SO2 are used in the wines.

Wine Enthusiast

This is a loaded wine, ripe with aromas of cherry cola, chopped herbs, white chocolate, blackberry and cassis. The aromatic presentation is never overpowering and the wine is in fact delicate and elegant with finely tuned finesse. Pair this Barolo with truffle-stuffed veal roast.

Score: 93. —Monica Larner, December 01, 2010.

Wine Advocate

The 2006 Barolo Brunate is an exotic, beguiling wine laced with dark red fruit, mocha, coffee beans, spices and plums. There is superb concentration and depth in the glass, all of which carries through to a long, resonating finish. This is a rather dark style for La Morra, but everything is impeccably balanced. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2026.

Score: 93. —Antonio Galloni, February 2010.

International Wine Cellar

Deep red with ruby highlights. Sour cherry, flowers and brown spices on the nose and palate, complicated by a light leafy quality. Then sweet but sharply delineated in the mouth, with very good lift and aromatic character. Finishes juicy and persistent, with just a hint of dryness on the back. The crop level was cut significantly by hail.

Score: 91+. —Stephen Tanzer, December 2009.
