Fabulous nose of licorice, mineral, tar and spices. Full-bodied, with supervelvety tannins and a long, long finish. Reminds me of a great vintage of La Chapelle in the late 1980s. Fabulous. A wine all in texture. Best after 2010.

Wine Enthusiast
This is an exceptional Syrah with a spirited Tuscan soul that delivers great intensity throughout and spicy tones of ripe fruit, smoked bacon, blueberry syrup and freshly milled black pepper. It's a beautiful expression of the variety with an impeccable mouthfeel and pristine flavors that ride strong until the very end.

Wine Advocate
As in past recent years, I find the 2005 Syrah the most compelling wine in this line-up. A veritable kaleidoscope of mint, cured meats, cracked black pepper, chocolate, earthiness and dark fruit emerges from this gorgeous effort. Remarkably layered and complex in a vintage that did not favor Syrah, this sumptuous wine possesses superb balance in a full-bodied style, with beautifully integrated tannins and tons of harmony. The 2005 Syrah spent a year in 100% new French barrels, followed by a second year in 100% new French barrels, but the oak is deftly balanced. Though not inexpensive by any sane definition of the word, I consider Tua Rita's Syrah an essential wine for any well-stocked cellar of the finest Italian wines. In just a few years it has emerged as a reference-point wine for the region, as well as Tua Rita's top bottling. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2022.

Sustainable practices incorporate organic standards and may exceed them and include ecologically and socially sound business practices such as fair pay for farm workers and energy conservation.
Screw Cap
Wines sealed with a screw cap as opposed to a cork, which experts report protects and preserves wine more effectively than does a cork, while also eliminating the possibility of cork taint.
No Sulfites
All wines naturally contain some sulfites, however wines that contain less than 10 parts per million sulfites are not required to include "Contains Sulfites" on their labels.

I rate wines using the 100-points scale. I have used this point system for close to 25 years. I still believe it is the simplest way to rate a wine, with its origins from grade school in the United States. A wine that I rate 90 points or more is outstanding (A), and worth buying. If I rate a wine 95 points or more (A+), it is a must buy.
