The Gewurztraminer grape has been cultivated in Europe for over a thousand years. It is thought to have originated in the village of Tramin in Italy’s Alto Adige region. Although Gewurztraminer may have come from Italy it is not grown there very much any more. The major Gewurztraminer wine region is the Alsace region of France. Many of the Alsatian Gewurztraminer wines are dry but there are a number that are very sweet late harvest or Vendange Tardive. Gewurztraminer is also grown in other parts of the world but none of these areas produce the quality of wine that Alsace does. It does need a cool climate so cooler areas of California, Washington and Oregon produce the best examples in the U.S. There are also some nice Gewurztraminer wines being produced in New Zealand.
