Sangiovese is the other great red grape of Italy, Nebbiolo being the other. It is believed that it has been planted here since Roman times, originating in Tuscany where it is the primary red wine grape grown today. There are a number of different Sangiovese varieties which produce red wines of different character. The best is usually considered to be a strain of Sangiovese Grosso called Brunello which is used to make Brunello di Montalcino in a tiny area of Tuscany. These wines are very big and bold and age very well. Chianti is the most famous of the wines made with Sangiovese, an area also located in Tuscany. Sangiovese is also grown in other regions of the world like California and Australia but Italy always seems to have the best Sangiovese wines. Wherever they are from you should buy Sangiovese wines, Chianti and Brunello di Montalcino at the Ultimate Wine Shop.
