The Syrah grape (called Shiraz grape in Australia) is thought to have originated in the Middle East. Syrah is used to make some very high quality wines from the Rhone Valley in France including Hermitage, Crozes-Hermitage and Cote-Rotie. In Australia, where Shiraz grapes are the most widely planted red wine grape, it also makes many high quality, long lived red wines in the Barossa Valley and Coonawarra regions. Syrah wine is also produced extensively in California but it has not gained a foothold in any other growing areas. When young these wines can be very spicy and tannic but as they age they can take on many dark fruit flavors. Some of the young wines from Australia can be very fruit forward from the time they are bottled. Wherever they are from you should buy Syrah and Shiraz wines at the Ultimate Wine Shop.
