The Viognier grape is actually considered relatively rare because of the small amount of acreage planted throughout the world. Considered hard to grow and susceptible to disease Viognier has gained quite a reputation for making a highly aromatic, floral scented wine with hints of apricots and peaches on the palate in the French area of Condrieu. It is also planted in the Cote Rotie area of the Northern Rhone where it is blended with Syrah to make the highly sought after Cote Rotie red wine. The only other areas of note for the Viognier grape are in California where some wineries have had much success with Viognier wines and in Australia where it has been used to blend with Syrah in a copy of the Cote Rotie wines. Wherever they are from you should buy Viognier wines at the Ultimate Wine Shop.
