The Zinfandel grape is often considered California’s red wine grape because it is not grown extensively in the rest of the world. Italy’s Primitivo grape is actually the same variety under a different name. In California, Zinfandel wines are made in a variety of ways. Many sweet wine lovers are familiar with White Zinfandel (which is actually pink in color). However, the best flavors come out when Zinfandel is made into the robust red wine that so many wine lovers enjoy. Red Zinfandel tends to be spicy and bold, with plenty of tannin and alcohol which might lead you to think it would age well but most Red Zinfandel is consumed relatively young.
