Some of Italy’s finest red wines are made using the Nebbiolo grape in the Piedmont region. These wines include Barolo, Barbaresco and Gattinara. These Nebbiolo wines are full-bodied and tannic when young but can soften with some aging. The robust Barolo wines generally need more aging than the more elegant Barbaresco wines. The Nebbiolo grape has not been planted in large quantities outside of northwest Italy with only a small amount grown in California.
