Grenache (or Grenache Noir, the red grape) is one of the most widely planted grapes in the world. Grenache grapes grow well in hot, dry climates like Southern France, Spain and parts of Australia. It develops very high sugar levels and therefore can produce Grenache wines with alcohol levels of 15% or 16%. In France Grenache is the primary grape used in making Chateauneuf-du-Pape blends. There are some exceptional Grenache wines being made in Australia and Spain. Spanish Grenache (where it's called Garnacha) is often blended with Tempranillo and in Australia a frequently found blend is Grenache, Shiraz and Mourvedre, the so-called GSM wines. Wherever they are from you should buy Grenache wines at Ultimate Wine Shop.
