The red Merlot grape is one of the primary grapes of Bordeaux, mostly used in blends but does take the center stage in Saint-Emilion and Pomerol. Often maligned as being too "soft" and un-complicated (like in the movie Sideways), there are some famous Chateau using the Merlot grape to make great Merlot wines like Petrus. Merlot grapes are planted in most wine growing regions of the world where it is used as a blending grape in most of them. Merlot wine has taken on a life of its own in California, Oregon and Washington where many Merlot wines are produced. And in the Italian regions of Friuli-Venezia Giulia and Veneto Merlot also produces some fine wines. Wherever they are from you should buy Merlot wines at the Ultimate Wine Shop.
