The Riesling grape is considered to be one of the great white wine grapes of the world. Native to Germany, it is now grown in all the major wine producing regions of the world. One of the attributes that makes this grape so special is that it can contain a high sugar content while retaining its acidity giving the resulting wines quite a long aging potential. Frequently the wines are somewhat spicy and contain flavors of apricots and peaches. Riesling wines can range from dry to very sweet. In Germany they are often called Kabinett (which can be semi-dry to dry), Spatlese (getting sweeter), Auslese (late harvest dessert wines), Beerenauslese (selected berries), Trockenbeerenauslese (dry select berries), and Eiswein (frozen grapes). And other areas like Alsace in France, Italy's Alto Adige region, California and Australia all produce excellent wines made from the Riesling grape. Wherever they are from you should buy Riesling wines at the Ultimate Wine Shop.
