"Pacenti is recognized as one of the premier producers in Montalcino. This Rosso could easily pass as somebody else's Brunello! Weighty red fruit with firm tannins and bright acidity, it really opens up in a decanter and can easily be cellar for five years or more."

These are quintessential Sangioveses that are wonderfully aromatic, opulently rich and powerfully structured. Giancarlo is considered to be one of the top Brunello pruducers. The Rosso, often considered the epitome of a "baby-Brunello", is ripe yet elegant, displaying notes of red currant and velvety tannins. 100% hand-harvested and hand-selected Sangiovese Grosso, the wine is vinified in temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks and then matured for 1 year in French-oak barriques, of which about 30-35% are new and the rest of 1-year-old. About 3,000 cases produced annually.
A little lean, but this red shows attractive dried black cherry and wood character. Medium-bodied, with a medium finish. Drink now. 2,500 cases made.
The 2008 Rosso di Montalcino opens with promising, expressive aromatics that lead to an initial burst of fruit. The wine then loses some of its intensity on the mid-palate, revealing hard, rough tannins that are uncharacteristic. Ideally the wine is best enjoyed upon release. In its finest vintages, Pacenti's Rosso can last ten years or more. A recent bottle of the 2001 was gorgeous. Vintage 2008, however, did not give Pacenti anywhere near as much quality with which to work. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2012.
